Dueling Club

INFO

The dueling club is a new addition to the special section of Under the Lake Fics. Because requests for additional methods of earning housepoints were flooding in, we asked some of our veteran members for ideas. Congratulations to Lorelei Phantomwall, who came up with the idea of a Dueling Club. Points will be awarded to anybody who participates, and extra points to those who do well.

Joining the dueling club is optional and any member of UTLF who wishes to join is accepted. Non-members are allowed to vote on duels which are underway, but not to join a duel themselves until joining UTLF. Duels are centered around writing fanfictions, and voting means that you must read the fanfictions written by the duelers.

When a member of the dueling club makes a challenge, they must state the approximate length in words of the fanfictions to be written (500-, 500-1000, 1000-3000, and 3000-6000). Also, they must state the rating of the fics to be written (G, PG, PG-13, or R). They also may choose whether or not to have a time-limit, and if so, choose the limit (one day, three days or less, a week or less, and two weeks or less). If a limit is not selected, the duel will go on until both members do their part, or one withdraws, plus a week-long voting time. When another member accepts a challenge to join a duel, they are expected to have read the information stated by the challenger and agreed with it.

In a duel, both members write a fanfiction, which must comply with the information stated by the challenger as well as UTLF's preliminary rules. It also must be based around the basic theme given to participants by a UTLF staff member (these will be simple, such as a ship, genre, or basic idea). A member is allowed to withdraw from the duel at any time, but will not receive any extra prize besides the original participation one. These fanfictions will then be posted on the site, where everybody can view them. Viewers read both fics and then vote on which one they think is written with more skill, and which one they find to their personal liking. The winner is, of course, the one who ends up with the most votes. UTLF staff members have nothing to do with the voting, and any accusation of cheating or bias can and will be taken as a grievous insult.

THIS IS A COMPETITIVE ACTIVITY!! EVERYBODY WHO FOLLOWS THE RULES RECEIVES A PRIZE!! IT IS MEANT TO BE FUN, SO *PLEASE* DON'T GET WORKED UP OVER LOSING!! EVERYBODY IS A WINNER! :)

Ranking

The system of ranking for UTLF's Dueling Club is quite simple.

  • Your loss number is subtrated from your win number.
  • The win number is determined by multiplying your number of wins by four (4).
  • The loss number is determined by counting each completed loss as one (1), and every noncompleted loss or withdrawal as 2, and adding them together.
  • For example: somebody wins 4 duels, withdraws from 1 duels, and loses but completes 2 duels. Their loss number is 4, because the withdrawal counts as two. Their win number is 16, because their number of wins (4) is multiplied by 4. Their total Dueling Club rank is 12, because 4 is subtracted from 16.
  • It sounds like an annoying math problem, but you don't have to worry about it. Everyone's rank is calculated by UTLF staff, and all you have to do is try to win (or complete) a lot of duels. :)
